Responsibility

In its operations, Cardon aims to promote ethical values and ensure our operations are responsible. The concept of ethics is broad. It includes action to promote human values, ecological thinking and that the company looks after them in other ways than in its own daily operations. The production chain in garment manufacturing is long. It consists of the preparation of raw materials, their modification for production, the manufacturing factory, its subcontractors and other actors around them.

To establish our own way of implementing these things, we have compiled here information about how they are implemented. The cooperation partners chosen by Cardon and how they do in these areas plays a significant role. Our goal is for the consumer to be able to shop with the confidence that our products have been ethically manufactured.

Certificates

There are many types of certificates and standards. All our products list the materials they are made of. The lack of a certificate does not necessarily mean that the product was not made in accordance with ethical principles. To avoid potential problems, we have concentrated our manufacturing in low risk countries in which the country’s operations in general and ethical operating methods are good. You can read more about the risk classification in the Amfori list.

Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)

The aim of the Better Cotton Initiative is to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in, and better for the sector’s future. It has seven principles it uses to drive this aim:

BCI Farmers minimize the impact of harmful crop protection

BCI Farmers use water more efficiently

BCI Farmers look after soil health

BCI Farmers promote natural diversity and use land responsibly

BCI Farmers care for and maintain cotton quality

BCI Farmers promote fair and decent work

BCI Farmers use an efficient administration system

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

The GOTS defines the requirements for organically manufactured products. Raw materials must be at least 70% organic and fulfil precise criteria for both manufacturing methods and materials used. Environmental and employee welfare have also been included in the list of requirements and each certified manufacturing facility must have its own wastewater treatment plant.

International Labour Organisation (ILO)

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is devoted to promoting social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights. The goal of the organization is to achieve lasting global peace through social justice. Currently, the ILO is promoting the Decent Work agenda, which has four aims:

Set and promote standards and fundamental principles and rights at work.

Create greater opportunities for women and men to decent employment and income.

Enhance the coverage and effectiveness of social protection for all.

Strengthen tripartism and social dialogue.

The organization also monitors and sets labour standards in member states.

Oeko-Tex

OEKO-TEX is a textile measuring standard that measures the amount of harmful materials in products. The testing locations are independent facilities in which raw materials and products are tested for their harmful chemical content. For the consumer, the standard is a guarantee of safe use. There are four classifications, with the requirements being stricter the closer to the skin the product is.

Class I: Baby clothes

Class II: Clothes worn close to the skin

Class III: Clothes with little skin contact

Class IV: Other textiles such as tablecloths, curtains

Transparency

We publish information about all the production chain operators we are aware of. When the production chain is displayed as transparently as possible, any stakeholder group can, if it wishes, inspect the ethical operating methods at various stages of the chain. We believe that openness builds trust.

Manufacturers

The most essential quality for us in manufacturers is high-quality production, but also human value and consideration of the environment. We verify the ethical values of raw materials through certificates which precisely define the various stages of raw materials at various stages and the independent bodies who monitor them.

Renewable energy

Fossil fuels are a large problem for sustainable development and ecological friendliness. For this reason, the electricity we use is produced at the Tammerkoski hydroelectric plant. All the plastic, cardboard and compostable waste generated are recycled appropriately. We monitor and regularly announce our carbon footprint using the SYKE Y-HIILARI tool. Our aim is to reduce our carbon footprint with consideration for expansion of our operations.

Carbon footprint 1 July 2018 – 30 June 2019: 176 kg

Material choices play a big role in comfortable wear and sustainability. To ensure this, we have chosen Black Moda as the provider for our first collection. Black Moda has operated on the Finnish market for over 20 years.

We quickly came to an understanding about the requirements for our products. As the distance between our offices was only a few kilometres, it has been easy to develop material choices in the right direction. In addition, the company’s values are at the familiar Finnish level.
